In November 2021, the NSW Government passed the Plastic Reduction and Circular Economy Act 2021. This legislation underscores the government's commitment to banning plastics and reducing plastic waste that pollutes the environment.
The act applies to the following entities:
- Retail businesses such as cafes, restaurants, takeaway food shops, bars, market stalls, supermarkets, discount stores, and online stores provide banned plastics, as the NSW Government outlines.
- Manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and wholesalers of prohibited items.
- Charitable, sporting, education, and community activities, including not-for-profit organizations, charities, and community groups that use any banned item as part of their services, events, activities, or fundraising.
This act aims to reduce plastic waste in the environment by eliminating single-use plastics and promoting a circular economy.
