QLD Single Use Plastic Ban

In March 2021, the QLD Government passed the Waste Reduction and Recycling (Plastic Items) Amendment Act 2021, which aims to reduce plastic waste in the state. The government has provided an easy-to-read fact sheet to help the public understand the new law and its exemptions.

Under the new law, certain plastic items will be banned from distribution in Queensland, but some exemptions exist. For instance, people with disabilities or healthcare needs may still need access to prohibited items. In addition, certain businesses, including clinics, hospitals, dental clinics, medical clinics, pharmacies, and aged care facilities, are exempt from providing these items for medical reasons. As a result, medical suppliers, distributors, and wholesalers can continue to sell banned items to these exempt businesses.

The banned items DO NOT include single-use plastic straws and cutlery integrated into pre-packaged products such as juice boxes with straws or yoghurt with spoons attached and other takeaway food containers such as sushi containers, sandwich wedges, food containers with plastic windows, and bowls with lids. Serving trays and platters and foam or plastic trays used for meats, fruits, and vegetables are also included in the ban.
